Renka (蓮華) is the eldest of the three Mikagura Sisters and has the spirit of a true Tokyoite. She makes her playable debut in Senran Kagura: Estival Versus. She and her sisters helped revive Ryōki, Ryōbi and Ryōna's older sister.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Renka has brown hair in a twin-tails with a cowlick in the shape of a lightning bolt. Renka has the generic morphology shared between most characters in the series. She wears a brown-red long-sleeved top with a matching mini-skirt and boots. She wears knee-high socks with golden bows and a double-tail cape.

Personality[]

She is a very energetic girl that dislike effeminate and cutesy things and, if there’s a commotion somewhere, is prone to butting in and raising her own brand of hell. No matter how tense a situation gets, though, she has a sense of humor about her and uses her laughter to break across to the other side. She has a simplistic way of thinking events and problems, making her a bad advisor when it comes to them: she always suggests and apply the solution with the less reason, making the problem worse

Background[]

She is the eldest of the Priestess, and like her younger siblings, she was educated in a secluded traditional village, the same one that Naraku comes from.

Through, she happens, with her sisters, to play frequently with a stranger girl, slightly older than them, in a white cult dress, and with several red ribbons around her hair. They play with her even if the village has forbidden contact between them and the outside world.

One day, while playing, they ask the stranger girl if she is a shinobi, to which the girl responds that yes, she is some kind of, but has a particular destiny, and another day, she asks them to warn the whole village: a monster is coming tonight.

Fearing the reactions of the elders about their source, and don't seriously believing the warning, the Mikagura do nothing of it. And they're almost going to regret it.

When night falls, and the whole village is sleeping, the Mikagura are woken up by sounds of combat: A Yōma, a parasitic demon, and one of the kinds to figure "human flesh" on their menu.

They notice the stranger girl shredding the monster. They admire her strength, and try to encourage her, but quickly notice that she is tired, and annoyed by the presence of so many potential victims for the yōma, resulting in her being swallowed by it.

The Yōma, happy to have taken it's entry, and about to take the main meal, suddenly explodes in pieces of demonic flesh. The stranger girl ended it by the outside with a kamikaze technique. All the Mikagura find left of her is one of her flowery ribbons.

The girl shares most characteristics with Kagura in her first form: a small girl with a white cult dress, red flowery ribbons around the hair and a playful personality. This is also a character that only few characters know, and the Mikagura never know her, and think she was a normal young shinobi that is dead-dead, while she is actually not.

Story[]

Estival Versus[]

In the beginning of the game, Renka starts out serving with her fellows Mikagura Sisters to dynamize the festival: If the guest teams don't take the Shinobi Bon Dance seriously, there is no reason for her and her sisters to arrive and to smash or just taunt some of their members. At least it was what she was supposed to do and doing at the beginning.

The longer the festival goes on, the lesser the Mikagura try to dynamize it, and explore the island to find Kagura, thinking her as a deceased shinobi. They keep it secret, but their inactivity, and shady preparations are discovered by Sayuri, with the help of Ryōki. They try to arrest and discipline the Mikagura, who resist in vain. Kafuru "saves" them by telling a seems-true lie to Ryōki, that releases them as kind as she is.

They had never succeeded in finding Kagura, sadly. They searched throughout the whole island; checking every corner, turned every stone they could find, but it's only by some chance that Kagura spoke to them, and put them in defy to become Kaguras in order to see her again.

It's only after that the Mikagura Sisters take the initiative to destroy every rival's festival platforms and win the Shinobi Bon Dance. Even if they succeeded in defeating the Crimson Squad by ambushing them shortly after Jasmine beat them, Asuka rises up and puts them out of course. They fail at becoming Kagura, but Asuka sympathizes and tells them that she never gives up on attaining her objectives, as they should not.

Shinobi Girl's Heart[]

Renka rages about how everybody worries about dumb things and how she's sick of it. On TV and walks, she sees gloomy looking people and wants to smack some happiness into them. While some people have it rough, she thinks everybody should keep life simple and to be happier. Since she doesn't want to listen to people mope, she decides to go fix the worried shinobis' problems.

"You! Throw those worries out the window! The sun's all bright 'n' happy!" -Renka

In Downtown, Renka finds Asuka wondering what to get and wants to know what's bothering Asuka, who insists it's not worth discussing. Renka insists and Asuka explains that her bust got a bit bigger and cannot decide which new bra to get. Renka assists Asuka by shouting in public about how Asuka's about to get a new bra. Asuka tries to stop her, but Renka screams about her bust growing and asks what bra would fit Asuka best. Renka defeats Asuka and celebrates solving Asuka's problem.

"Shut-in?! What the hell are ya saying, ya bum?! Hurry up and get out there!" -Renka

On the Hebijo Academy Grounds, Renka sees Miyabi telling Murasaki she should spend more time outside, but Murasaki retorts that her room is comfy. Renka yells about how she found a new problem to solve, which surprises Murasaki and Miyabi. Renka tells them to not be chickens and to let her help them. During battle, Miyabi and Murasaki explain their problem. Renka suggests they blow up Murasaki's room and then have Murasaki live in a tent so she can be a shut-in and technically be outside. Frustrated at Renka's proposal, they battle Renka. However, Renka wins and decides to go help someone else.

"Diet?! What the hell are ya saying, ya bum?! Eat as much as you want!" -Renka

In the Hanzo Academy Gym, Hibari says she has to hold it, and Renka tells her she won't solve anything with that look on her face. Renka offers to help Hibari out with her private matter. Hibari explains she wants to eat some Mr. Buny cookies but won't since she's on a diet. Renka offers to help Hibari by destroying all shops who sell the cookies, so Hibari can't get them and thus has nothing to hold back on. Hibari worries about the shopkeepers, so Renka decides to blow up the Mr. Bunny cookies factory instead. Hibari says that's the same thing. Upon beating Hibari, Renka states that helping everyone feels great.

"Sexual harassment?! What the hell are ya saying, ya bum?! Just roll with it!" -Renka

On the Sensoji Streets, Katsuragi and Haruka sexually harassing Yozakura. Renka notices Yozakura's troubled face and offers to help. Renka realizes Yozakura's being chased, and Yozakura tells Renka to stop Katsuragi and Haruka grope attempts. They tell Yozakura they'll be gentle, and Renka tells Yozakura she's popular and helps her by groping her first. By groping Yozakura, Renka will help Yozakura get used to it and is therefore helping. Yozakura hates Renka's solution and the other two want Yozakura for themselves. Renka defeats them and celebrates another problem solved.

"Uproar?! What the hell are ya saying, ya bum?! This is fun!" -Renka

At the Festival Grounds, Jasmine finds Renka and tells her she needs some punishment. Renka wonders why since she's been helping others all day. Jasmine explains she's been doing it wrong. In battle, Renka questions what's wrong with solving problems, and Jasmine explains that her meddling has worsened everyone's problems. Renka questions if Jasmine noticed her cleints' smiles, and Jasmine replies that Renka was the only one smiling. Jasmine tells Renka that she must take responsibility and that her oblivious intentions are problematic. Renka wins and realizes she went overboard.

49
Realizing she's caused everyone more grief, Renka realizes apologizing to them isn't enough and that self-punishment will work. She does what she hates the most in front of everyone: wearing a cute frilly dress. Asuka tells her it looks good on her and takes a picture. Renka thinks how she'd rather be naked than wear cute, frilly things. Despite wanting to rip off her dress, Renka keeps wearing it as atonement and resolves to pay her debts for any future screw-ups. She still hates wearing the embarrassing dress.

Dual Shinobi Hearts[]

A Heated Battle[]

After conversing their problems to each other, both Miyabi and Homura team up and show Renka and Hanabi their combined strengths of evil.

Dialogue[]

Homura: "*sigh*..."

Miyabi: "What's wrong, Homura?"

Homura: "Well, lately, a lot of the time, I've been feeling like I'm the only one who gives a sh*t."

Miyabi: "...Are you feeling that way right now?"

Homura: "Yeah, and what if I am?! This is serious!"

Miyabi: "It doesn't take much to stir your passions, does it?"

Homura: "Oh, right... Sorry."

Miyabi: "No, there's no need to worry about it. All we have to do is look ahead and keep moving forward as usual."

Homura: ""We"?"

Miyabi: "Well, there's...something on my mind as well."

Homura: "You too? What's that?"

Miyabi: "...My speech is far too flowery."

Homura: "Oh, so you know that."

Miyabi: "Wha--?! So it's true!"

Miyabi: "I had feared that everyone thought so, but now I know for certain! Ah, I should have curbed my poeticism long ago! Now it's too late! Such humiliation!"

Homura: "Whoa, c'mon. Chill out. You just said it yourself..."

Homura: ""All we have to do is look ahead and keep moving forward as usual"! So don't worry so much about what other people think!"

Miyabi: "Of course. Y-you're right."

Homura: "So, "as usual," what do you say we go a round?"

Miyabi: ""As usual"..."

Homura: "No fear, Miyabi! All we've got to do is go on charging down our Paths of the Shinobi!"

Miyabi: "..."

Miyabi: "To endure the indifference of the masses...to strive for the power of passion...to grasp the sword of revolution!"

Homura: "Miyabi! You get me!"

Miyabi: "Indeed! Your words were as a kiss from a bright, thorned rose, which drew the blood from my lips and let it flow to my heart!"

Homura: "That's it, Miyabi! You're setting my soul on fire!"

Miyabi: "Burn through, anima brucia, and lift this fallen angel's wings upon your rising heat!"

Homura: "There may be those who point and laugh at us, we who steer our lives by the light of our fiery urges..."

Miyabi: "...But I care not for them! One day, a new generation will look back upon us with awe and respect! So for now, let us go on forward!"

Miyabi: "Let us venture forth, Homura! Fate itself is in our hands!"

"No one wants a frozen past!" -Miyabi
"I want to set tomorrow on fire!" -Homura

Beginning of Mission:

Homura: "I burn hotter than magma and twice as intensely! That's me!"

Miyabi: "Wrapped within the sheath of darkness, the world is a blade called peace."

Renka: "...Wh-what's wrong with those two? Are all the other shinobi around here like this?"

Hanabi: "I like how Homura's so impulsive! Can I go do what she's doing?"

Renka: "Bein' impulsive makes sense 'round a festival , but Homura's a little bit...different."

Homura: "Different? Different how?! Brawls are like the flowers of festivals! We're alike in that way! You could call us sworn siblings!"

Renka: "See, this's the bad kind of "impulsive.""

Miyabi: "Then touch my heart's cold flame, and let it sear you a scar named regret."

Renka: "Yeesh! Do you ALWAYS talk like that?"

Homura: "Pretty much."

Miyabi: "What a foolish question."

Hanabi: "That's so cool! I wanna talk like her!"

Renka: "N-no, don't!"

Hanabi: ""What a foolish question..." How's that?! How's that?!"

Miyabi: "Not bad. Your tongue is a gift, like a diamond."

Hanabi: "All right!"

Renka: "Put a sock in it already!"

Hanabi: "OOOHHH! That whole speech got me right here!"

Homura: "Hanabi, you're no longer our enemy. You're one of us."

Miyabi: That's right. I would go so far as to proclaim that we share the selfsame soul."

Hanabi: "Aww, I'm so, SO honored! Eee, so happy!"

Renka: "Hey! Snap out of it, Hanabi!"

Miyabi: "Kindly put your happiness aside for now. We face a dreadful enemy ahead, one without form or substance."

Homura: "...We're up against the public eye, an enemy much stronger than any giant yōma. Knowing that, Hanabi, can you still commit?"

Hanabi: "Of course! I don't care what others think of me!"

Homura: "Miyabi. Looks like the fire from our souls is already spreading out."

Miyabi: "Indeed. "No life, no shinobi." That is the only way to melt this frozen world."

Hanabi: ""No life, no shinobi"!"

Renka: "Hanabi!"

Miyabi: "One day, you will come to understand, Renka. You will see that only the noble path remains."

Homura: "If you want to live passionately, come ask us anytime. Our doors will always be open. I'll introduce you to some intense part-time jobs."

Renka: "..."

Homura: "Now, off to the next battlefield! Our struggle is just getting started!"

Miyabi: "Yeah!"

Hanabi: "Hip, hip, hooray!"

Renka: "Whatever. They're just foolin' around. They're probably harmless. Hanabi'll be fine with 'em."

Summer Surprise[]

Renka and Kafuru were out and about. Renka shouts out about the bright sun and rays. It was like an everlasting summer even though it was supposed to be winter. Kafuru tells her elder sister that she was way too excited. Renka brushes her words off as all she wanted was a little excitement in the heat. Renka then points out that if they were talking summer then obviously, they’re talking about summer festivals. Although a regular summer festival wasn’t going to cut it. They needed to keep it a secret and make it a big surprise as it would get everyone pumped. Now that their plans were set in stone Renka gets her sisters ready to prepare the festival. Even though it would be hard work Renka did acknowledge that even though she loves festivals to death preparing everything all at once is tough. Kafuru then tells her older sister she wasn’t helping and walks away. Renka doesn’t say a word as her in her words cold-hearted sister leaves her with no interest in the festival. She even questions if Kafuru is really her sister. Yozakura then suddenly passes by. Thinking she loves summer festivals Renka asks Yozakura to help her and explained everything to her and she is immediately up for it. Yozakura tells Renka to leave the yukatas to her and she’ll see if the shop can pitch in as well. Renka thanked Yozakura and asks her to keep quiet about the festival as it was important to make it a surprise. Renka knew that the real challenge would be keeping it a secret from the others, she knows if she tells everyone to wear a yukata they’ll probably figure out what she was planning. She thinks about how to get them to wear the yukata’s before it hits her. She’ll spray them with water from head to toe so they have to change. While Yozakura stuffs the dressing room with nothing but yukatas so they have no choice but to wear them. And so it was settled Renka extatically sets out to get their show on the road.

Renka first runs into Murakumo and tells her she was going to get soaking wet. When questioned why Renka tells her it was because she just laid her hands on a water gun and that meant it was on. Murakumo accepts her challenge and the two begin their water war as Renka puts it. Which she wins. Renka tells her not to worry she had a change of clothes nearby.

She next approached Murasaki and begun spraying her telling her to drink it down and asking if she was wet enough yet. Murasaki complains that the water was cold. Renka then tells her it was time to get changed. Murasaki points out she still had her swimsuit on. So Renka tells her she was not wet enough yet so she’ll keep it up. Murasaki then tells her she doesn’t think she’ll go down without a fight. The two then fight in a water gun duel with Renka winning. Murasaki is then told to get changed already as she’ll be glad she did.

Renka then approaches Hikage requesting a duel. Hikage then tells her she was sleepy. Renka tells her that was perfect she could splash cold water on her to wake her. Hikage told her that would just be a pain in the ass so she wasn’t going to let her do that. Renka responds with “Less bitchin’, more soakin’!” and thus began their water gun fight with Renka winning. Renka questions Hikage why would she want to sleep when it was so bright out.

Renka is approached by Ikaruga who heard the rumors about her. And tells her she must be the wet perverted demon they’ve been talking about. Renka responds by asking her who she’s calling a pervert she was just having water fights. Ikaruga told her she’d been spraying people without asking them for permission. She was not going to let that lewdness slide. Renka asks her how was that lewd. Brushing that off she told Ikaruga she was going to get her all wet too. The two fight in a water gun duel ending in Renka’s victory. Ikaruga comments about her defeat while Renka tells her that it was time to get changed.

She approaches Yumi the last girl she had yet to soak she tells her she was getting soaked like everyone else. Yumi accepts her challenge but asks her why she was doing this. Renka tells her she’ll find out later. Yumi suspects she was planning something. But tells her to understand she won’t be holding back. Renka shouting out that fire and fighting are the flowers of festivals tells Yumi to bring everything she had. In the end Renka once again wins the fight. Renka comments that everything was set.

Festival Blow out-dbsm7xs
Having gotten everyone into a yukata Renka shouts out “Now, let’s get this party started!” She pounds her taiko drum which was a signal to light up the lanters and the whole area changed to a festival ground. Everyone sends up a cheer Renka’s plan was a success. With the festival platform in the center everyone enjoys the bon dance. Murakumo comments about the pleasant surprise while Hikage says she wasn’t sure but she thought she might be having fun. Yozakura tells Renka the plan went off without a hitch. Renka even thanks Yozakura for her help. Yozakura tells her she’s just happy everyone’s having a good time. Renka seeing the party was in full swing. But felt like something was missing she tried to figure out what it could be until someone tapped her shoulder. Kafuru tells her she forgot the most important thing. Kafuru and Hanabi were standing beside her wearing Yukatas. Renka realizes what it was, fireworks. Kafuru then asks Hanabi what was 638,698 times 2,763,987*. Hanabi tries to figure it out but ends up exploding out of sheer confusion. Renka watched as bigger and bigger fireworks kept going up. She then shouts about how this was what she was talking about, now it was a festival. Kafuru complains how about she had to remind her. Renka pulls her little sister to her side and puts her arm around her shoulder. Renka thanks Kafuru and tells her she really is her little sister. Kafuru makes a comment about as long as she knew that. Her face began to glow redder than the fireworks. Renka shouts out about how they should keep the party going all night.

Main Articles: Renka/Estival Versus  · Renka/Peach Beach Splash

"Renka is a close-range monster. Her range is limited, but most of her attacks have a Zap ability, which can lead to major damage. Her weakness is that her moves leave her wide open, so make sure to end your combos on Aerial Raves. After performing a Shinobi Transformation, she can also deal with long range enemies with her charged Breach Art. If you like, you can mash the Breach Art to change its effect and focus on the front - just be careful when there are enemies beside her. Renka has a hard time against flying enemies, so try to bring them down with Jumping Strong Attacks." -Estival Versus: Renka's Battle Card

Trivia[]

  • Renka's choice of weapon are a pair of mallet drums sticks, but can be alluded to that of bachi drum sticks; which are mallets used for the particular drum that she plays on.
  • Renka uses an instrument known as a Taiko Drum; which is really a range of Japanese percussion instruments.
    • Her initial drum used for most of her attacks are known as a shime-daiko drum, a kumi-daiko for her second hidden ninpo, whiles her ultimate secret ninja art is that of a O-daiko.
  • They all display the mitsudomoe symbol on the skin (or face) of the drums.
  • Renka's enthusiastic and fiery personality strongly resembles that of Sanada Yukimura from the SENGOKU BASARA series.
  • Renka's fighting style and weapon choice in general can be alluded to that of the thunder/ lighting god, Raijin.
    • In Japanese mythology, most depictions of Raijin show a large oni-like man who wields two bachi sticks and carries behind him a wheel of taiko drums in which all display the tomoe symbol (in some instances, mitsudomoe will replace them).
      • Renka has a slew of drums that appear from the lighting-based energy and strikes them to conjure bolts as well as forming the drum wheel (like on Raijin's back) to create the O-daiko drum for her ultimate attack.
  • Renka shares the same birthday as Haruka.
  • Renka's pre-transformation outfit is not available for any character except for her and her sisters to wear. While all characters have a "Mikagura Outfit 1" in Estival Versus, Renka and Hanabi have three versions, and Kafuru has four available. Additionally, what other characters call Outfit 1 is actually Outfit 3 for the sisters. For Renka, Outfit 1 is the version she and both her sisters use in missions while Outfit 2 is the version she uses in cutscenes (with the jacket). Outfit 3 is Hanabi's cutscene version and has a noticeably shorter skirt than the other versions. All of this remains true for Peach Beach Splash except the other characters now correctly identify the outfit they have access to as Outfit 3 (and still don't have access to any of the other versions).
  • Senran Kagura: New Wave confirms that Renka and her sisters are from the Goshin Village in Timeline 1, and that Sayuri brought them to Timeline 2 to help with the Kagura Millennium Festival, and hasn't sent them back yet because there is still something they must do in Timeline 2.
