Kafuru (華風流) is a character that debuts in Senran Kagura: Estival Versus.

The youngest of the Mikagura Sisters, Kafuru prides herself on her intellectual maturity and is often deliberately condescending to those she deems her mental inferiors – especially her sister Hanabi.

As a way of asserting her brainpower over others, she loves to argue, and when those arguments escalate into violence, she's good and ready for that too.

Her main weapons are a pair of magical squirt guns, which are shaped like dolphins.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Kafuru is a young girl with fair skin and large, dark grey eyes normally depicted squinting or slanted. She wears her long, wheat-colored hair in low pigtails each held with a white bow. On the right side of her head is a gold crown. She wears a pale blue and white dress with a green choker that has a whistle hanging from it. The dress is accented with red strings tied into bows, a row of dark blue tiny buttons, and a blue plaid skirt on top of a white pleat petticoat.

Personality[]

A pest with a selfish and calculating streak, she often speaks to others in a condescending manner, riling them up, and often unbearable to some. Whether it’s through her fluent use of Internet slang or clever use of baby talk, her mockery knows no bound. In one event in Senran Kagura: Estival Versus, Kafuru teased Mirai, claimed she was taller than Mirai, talking about her small chest, and saying “That must be frustrating. How Frustrating for you.”. She is also sometimes somewhat manipulative, like the time when the told a lie to Ryōki to be released thanks to her kindness.

That being said, she knows better than to try and adopt those same manners with her sisters, though she is known to tease Hanabi from time to time. She has a chest that’s neither big nor particularly small.

Background[]

She is the youngest of the Priestesses, and like her older siblings,  she was educated in a secluded traditional village, the same one that Naraku comes from.

Through, she happens, with her sisters, to play frequently with a strange girl, slightly older than them, in a white cult dress, and with several red ribbons around her hair. They play with her even if the village has forbidden contact between them and the outside world.

One day, while playing, they asks the stranger girl if she is a shinobi, to which the girl responds that yes, she is some kind of, but has a particular destiny, and another day, she asks them to warn the whole village: a monster is coming tonight.

Fearing the reactions of the elders about their source, and don't seriously believing the warning, the Mikagura do nothing of it. And they're almost going to regret it.

When night falls, and the whole village is sleeping, the Mikagura are woken up by sounds of combat: A Yōma, a parasitic demon, and one of the kinds to figure "human flesh" on their menu.

They notice the stranger girl shredding the monster. They admire  her strength, and try to encourage her, but quickly notice that she is tired, and annoyed by the presence of so many potential victims for the yōma, resulting in her being swallowed by it.

The Yōma, happy to have taken it's entry, and about to take the main meal, suddenly explodes in pieces of demonic flesh. The strange girl ended it by the outside with a kamikaze technique. All the Mikagura find left of her is one of her flowery ribbons.

The girl shares most characteristics with Kagura in her first form: a small girl with a white cult dress, red flowery ribbons around the hair and a playful personality. This is also a character that only few characters know, and the Mikagura never know her, and think she was a normal young shinobi that is dead-dead, while she is actually not.

Story[]

Estival Versus[]

Kagura Millennium Festival[]

In Estival Versus, she serves with her fellows Mikagura Sis to dynamise the Festival: If the guest teams don't take the  Shinobi Bon Dance seriously, there is no reason for  her and her sisters to arrive and to smash or just taunt some of their members. At least it was what she was supposed to do and doing at the beginning. Kafuru in particular taunts her opponents, specially when they have some jealousy about others (like Ryōbi), triggering them, and leading to a fight, that they win.

The longer the Festival goes on, the lesser the Mikagura try to dynamise it, and explore the island to find Kagura, thinking her as a deceased shinobi. They keep it secret, but their inactivity, and shaddy preparations are discovered by Sayuri, with the help of Ryōki. They try to arrest the Mikagura, who resist in vain. She "saves" them by telling a seems-true lie to Ryōki, that releases them as kind as she is.

She is forced to do belly-dance to avoid a blast from Hanabi, who was thinking  why they couldn't find Kagura, after a failed attempt by Renka.

The Mikagura never succeeds in finding Kagura, they searched the whole island, checked every stone they could, but it's only by some  randomness that Kagura  speaks to them, and put them in defy to become Kaguras (the grade this time) in order to see her.

It's only after that they take the initiative to destroy every rival festival platform and win the Shinobi Bon Dance. Even if they suceeds in defeating Homura's Crimson Squad by ambushing them shortly after Jasmine beat them, Asuka put them out of course. They fail at becoming Kagura, but Asuka sympathizes but still tell them she is not going to give up her objectives.

Shinobi Girl's Heart[]

Kafuru receive a letter by arrow from Sayuri telling her that she has kids' clothes that would please her. Kafuru is offended by the message and thinks Sayuri sees her as a kid. She thinks first to threaten Sayuri by writing back that she has a nice burial shroud for Sayuri, but knows she'll die horribly if she does. She then just wanders angrily around the game's locations.

"Grrrrrrr... Don't talk down to me!" -Kafuru

On the Hanzo Academy Rooftop, Hibari sees a livid Kafuru and asks if she's okay. Hibari says someone Kafuru's size could be kidnapped if they wander around alone. Insulted, Kafuru says Hibari is just as susceptible to kidnapping, but Hibari says she's safe since she looks more mature. Kafuru questions her, and Hibari explains that she loves pink and candy. When questioned by Kafuru again, Hibari returns the question and asks about Kafuru's favorite color and food. Kafuru replies light blue and popsicles, which Hibari finds less mature. Kafuru tells her to shut up and wins the fight.

"Grrrrrrr... I'm not a kid, you know!" -Kafuru

Further infuriated, Kafuru wanders to Mt. Orochi Training Area, and Hikage and Yomi asks if she's okay. Kafuru asks why she wouldn't be, and Yomi explains that apparently Hanzō tried talking to a younger student, and Hikage says he was "trying to talk to her" alright. Yomi says they were getting worried. Kafuru asks how young, and Yomi replies young enough that they worried about Kafuru. Curious about this, Kafuru jokes if she's jailbait when she knows she's a mature lady. Incredulous, Yomi asks if Kafuru doesn't cry herself to sleep, and Hikage says it's bad to do so and so is pretending to be asleep. Kafuru denies their accusations, and Yomi questions her denial, furthering upsetting Kafuru. Once again, Yomi questions Kafuru's well-being and further pushes her buttons. An enraged Kafuru beats them and demands they remember she's a lady.

"Grrrrrrr... I'm just as mature as you are!" -Kafuru

In Gessen Academy, Minori invites Kafuru to play, and Kafuru replies she's busy. Minori suggests playing house, and Kafuru huhs. Minori repeats they should play house, and Kafuru calls her insane and questions her age. Dodging the question, Minori says she'll be the mom, and Kafuru asks why. Obviously, Minori says Kafuru'll be the daughter, and Kafuru says Minori isn't her mom and won't allow her to pretend to be. Minori tells Kafuru to stop being rebellious and to eat her veggies, further irritating Kafuru. Winning the fight, Kafuru ridicules Minori for playing house at her age.

"We're all adults here!" -Kafuru

At Sensoji, Mirai, Ryōbi, and Ryōna see Kafuru. Ryōbi warns Kafuru she can't be wandering alone, and Mirai clarifies Hanzō made a girl in the area cry recently. Knowing about the incident from Yomi and Hikage, Kafuru insists she can handle herself. Ryōbi questions her, and Kafuru demands they stop thinking she's too young to protect herself. Kafuru says she's as capable as anyone else, and Ryōna wants her to yell at her more. Not getting Ryōna's masochism, Kafuru asks what's with her. Ryōna says she's a dog and also a sow. Kafuru repeats her question, and Ryōbi says she'll understand when she's more experienced. Again, Kafuru wins and says that not understanding perverts doesn't make her immature.

"If everyone keeps talking down to me, I'll go obsolete!" -Kafuru

At the Festival Grounds, Kafuru finds Sayuri/Jasmine and tells her that they need to talk. Sayuri asks her if she wants to go to the restrooms, wants strawberry dafukus, or other childish things. Kafuru refuses each of Sayuri's proposals. Sayuri doesn't understand what she wants and was about to suggest Kafuru is acting childish before interrupting herself. Knowing what Sayuri meant to say, Kafuru is more offended, and Sayuri gets what's she doing.

Kafuru shows the letter from the beginning to Sayuri, who tells her that she misunderstood her message. Sayuri explains that the kids' clothes message meant that she thinks that Kafuru is going to be the first to be a mother, which calms Kafuru down immediately. She's amazed at the idea of being a mother before Yomi and the others (and hence "more mature" than them). In the end, she hugs Sayuri, who pats her on the head like a spoiled child.

Kafuru tells Murasaki not to move she takes notice and asks her if something was wrong but she chooses to ignore the question as she was battling a monster on her phone. She glides her finger on her phone screen to give it some hyoryogan. Kafuru is able to catch it the Shinomon. Murasaki appears to be confused at what she’s talking about Kafuru begins to tell her about Shinomon Gozaru. (AKA not Pokemon Go) It was the world’s most famous mobile game and not just among shinobi. She was surprised Murasaki hadn’t heard about it. She then tells her to download it and tells her how to play the game. Hibari arrives seeing the two playing Shinomon as well. Kafuru sensed a Shinomon battle thinking she was going to take her castle. Hibari tells her she was just trying to catch one more thing so she was looking around this area. Kafuru was shocked at what she just heard, Hibari had caught all the others she was questioning what kind of girl Hibari was she didn’t even have the proper training for it. Muraski chimes in suggesting they all walk around the Island together wanting to know more about Shinomon Go. Hibari agrees to it thinking it sounded great. Kafuru was okay with it. Shinomon Gozaru had a trading feature meaning if she moves with Hibari who’s caught all but one monster Kafuru could get her leftovers. Seeing this opportunity to get all but one just like Hibari she declares she’ll be a Shinomon Master.

Their first stop is the Shinobi Estate Hibari is being cheery as usual. Kafuru informs the others that there was something in the area. Muraski didn’t see anything on her screen. Kafuru tells her not to look at just the screen but to stretch out to her surroundings. She says to her there were traces of Shinomon around the area. She points out to the footprints. Murasaki is impressed by Kafuru. Kafuru mutters to herself about the rare Shinomon was all hers. She is able to catch the Nintotto. Hibari glances at Kafuru’s catch saying it’s cute but she already had it. Kafuru excuses herself while she goes on to catch them all.

They later run into all five members of Gessen. Shiki approaches them wanting to have a Shinomon Battle. Murasaki asks her if she plays Shinomon too. which Shiki confirms as it’s the hip thing right now. Murakumo speaks up saying that when your eyes meet you have a Shinomon battle that’s the rule. Hibari comments that Murakumo was playing too. Kafuru accepts her challenge. They go on to win their "Shinomon" battle and Kafuru is able to acquire two rare Shinomon. Hibari tells her she already had them so she could have them.

They come across the Crimson Squad. Haruka approaches them asking if they were playing Shinomon as well. Kafuru makes a snarky remark about what if they were. Haruka giggles at her words and asks if they would mind participating in her experiment. Murasaki comments that she feels something sinister. Haruka tells her not to worry as she’d been working on a secret medicine made just for Shinomon users. Kafuru questions what kind of secret medicine as anyway she said it, it sounded sketchy. In the end they refuse. Hibari checks up on the Shinomon she just caught which is one she once again already has. Kafuru and Murasaki also got a duplicate. Kafuru comments that the path of the Shinomon Master is a harsh one.

Murasaki then catches a weird monster called Bebebee she even says it was cute. Hibari shouts out that, that one was a hard one to catch. This shocked Kafuru. Hibari further comments that it’s the super-rarest super rare. Kafuru demands that Murasaki give it her. Murasaki tells her she can’t do that. Murasaki flat out refuses to give it to her. Kafuru gives up on getting it but says to her that next one she gets she calls dibs.

They are eventually spotted by Jasmine. Who complains that youngsters these days were wasting time on games. Kafuru having noticed her tells her that Shinomon was really fun. Jasmine questions her about reality. She’d be a good for nothing layabout if you keep playing around. Murasaki tells her that wasn’t true and that is may just be a game but because of it she, Kafuru and Hibari all became better friends. Kafuru even tells her they caught the greatest Shinomon of all: friendship. Jasmine tells them if they insist then to show her that friendship in battle. So the three of them fight Jasmine in a water gun battle with them emerging victorious. Jasmine was amazed that a game could hold such power and asks where she could download it.

Hibari screams out she sees the last Shinomon she needed. Kafuru points her phone in the direction where Hibari was pointing hers for the sake of completion she was going to catch it no matter what. She ran ahead of the others. Murasaki even joined in on the race. Kafuru then tickles Murasaki on the sides with all her might. Murasaki complained that wasn’t fair so she began tickling Kafuru. Sadly for both of them Hibari used this opportunity to catch the final Shinomon which she proudly displays for both to see. But she chooses to let it go shocking Kafuru who begins questioning why she’d do that. Hibari tells her it was because she wanted to keep playing with them some more with a smile on her face. She even further points out it wouldn’t be any fun to call it quits when they just started. Kafuru thinks about what she just heard even thinking that it may be more fun this way. She did go after Shinomon for completion’s sake but now that she had friends, she’s enjoying it more. It was like having extra people multiplies the fun. Kafuru then questions what they should do next. Murasaki suggests they find new rivals. Hibari agreed and that they should catch more Shinomon. Their road to becoming Shinomon Masters has just begun and their journey continues toward the horizon.

Main Articles: Kafuru/Estival Versus  · Kafuru/Peach Beach Splash

Kafuru fights with a pair of water-guns and specializes in long range projectile techniques. Her water-guns fire reflective aqua bullets capable of bouncing off of surfaces and she's incredibly agile on the field.

"Kafuru wields two dolphin-shaped water pistols. Their "bullets" can pierce as well as bounce off walls. In a tight enclosed space, she's the ultimate threat. Outside of that space, she's still an all-around character with fast attacks and great range. Even her normal chain attacks can rack up very high combos. Her weakness is against flying characters, so be sure to take them out with the usual Jumping Strong Attack strategy. If you need a breather, her All Range Festival is a great Secret Ninja Art. If you want to finish the battle off, then perform her Ultimate Secret Ninja Art, as it sucks in everything in front of her." -Estival Versus: Kafuru's Battle Card

Trivia[]

  • She's the first moderately endowed character in the series, though she's bigger than Ranmaru.
  • Kafuru shares the same birthday as Kiriya.
  • She is the Highest ranked of the Mikagura Sisters, being 17th at SKEV popularity poll.
  • Kafuru's pre-transformation outfit is not available for any character except for her and her sisters to wear. While all characters have a "Mikagura Outfit 1" in Estival Versus, Renka and Hanabi have three versions, and Kafuru has four available. Additionally, what other characters call Outfit 1 is actually Outfit 3 for the sisters. For Kafuru, Outfit 1 is the version she and both her sisters use in missions while her exclusive Outfit 4 is the version she uses in cutscenes (with the longer jacket than her sister's cutscene versions). Outfit 2 is Renka's cutscene version, while Outfit 3 is Hanabi's cutscene version and has a noticeably shorter skirt than the other versions. All of this remains true for Peach Beach Splash except the other characters now correctly identify the outfit they have access to as Outfit 3 (and still don't have access to any of the other versions).
  • Senran Kagura: New Wave confirms that Kafuru and her sisters are from the Goshin Village in Timeline 1, and that Sayuri brought them to Timeline 2 to help with the Kagura Millennium Festival, and hasn't sent them back yet because there is still something they must do in Timeline 2.
