Hanabi (華毘) is a playable character from the Senran Kagura series. She makes her playable debut in Senran Kagura: Estival Versus.

As the middle child among the Mikagura Sisters, Hanabi acts and speaks just how she thinks. Though she's not the smartest around, she makes up for it with pyro-technic work proffesionalism.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

In her usual outfit, she usually wears her shrine maiden outfit. But, in her Shinobi attire, she wears a striped tank top along with a loosely worn kimono with a smiley face pin. On her forehead, she wears a white hachimaki and her lower body attire consists of a denim skirt with a white ribbon tied on it and white flip flops.

Personality[]

An energetic and athletic girl, she’s not one for subtlety in her thinking, only able to think in a straightforward manner. Asking her any tough questions just might end up making her literally blow up in a fireworks blast, in spite of anything fragile in her range. When it’s all said and done, while she’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, she’s nonetheless self-aware of her actions and feels bad when she does something wrong. She is also very skilled and passionate in all things pertaining to gunpowder: she doesn't mind surprising others with an unarmed bomb.

Background[]

She is the middle of the Priestesses, and like her siblings,  she was educated in a secluded traditional village, the same one that Naraku comes from.

Through, she happens, with her sisters, to play frequently with a strange girl, slightly older than them, in a white cult dress, and with several red ribbons around her hair. They play with her even if the village has forbidden contact between them and the outside world.

One day, while playing, they asks the stranger girl if she is a shinobi, to which the girl responds that yes, she is some kind of, but has a particular destiny, and another day, she asks them to warn the whole village: a monster is coming tonight.

Fearing the reactions of the elders about their source, and don't seriously believing the warning, the Mikagura do nothing of it. And they're almost going to regret it.

When night falls, and the whole village is sleeping, the Mikagura are woken up by sounds of combat: A Yōma, a parasitic demon, and one of the kinds to figure "human flesh" on their menu.

They notice the strange girl shredding the monster. They admire  her strength, and try to encourage her, but quickly notice that she is tired, and annoyed by the presence of so many potential victims for the yōma, resulting in her being swallowed by it.

The Yōma, happy to have taken it's entry, and about to take the main meal, suddenly explodes in pieces of demonic flesh. The stranger girl ended it by the outside with a kamikaze technique. All  the Mikagura find left of her is one of her flowery ribbons.

The girl shares most characteristics with Kagura in her first form: a small girl with a white cult dress, red flowery ribbons around the hair and a playful personality. This is also a character that only few characters know, and the Mikagura never know her, and think she was a normal young shinobi that is dead-dead, while she is actually not.

Story[]

Estival Versus[]

She serves with her fellows Mikagura Sis to dynamize the Festival: If the guest teams don't take the  Shinobi Bon Dance seriously, there is no reason for  her and her sisters to not arrive and to not smash or just taunt some of their members. At least it was what she was supposed to do and doing at the beginning.

The specificity with Hanabi is that she was about to explode at least 3 times: the First and Third times were calmed by belly-dancing by her siblings, both Renka (Both times) and Kafuru (Third time). The Second was calmly solved by a punch by Sayuri.

The longer the Festival goes on, the lesser the Mikagura try to dynamize it, and explore the island to find Kagura, thinking her as a deceased shinobi. They keep it secret, but their inactivity, and shady preparations are discovered by Sayuri, with the help of Ryōki. They try to subdue the Mikagura, who resist in vain. Kafuru "saves" them by telling a seems-true lie to Ryōki, that releases them as kind as she is.

They never succeeds in finding Kagura, they searched the whole island, checked every stone they could, but it's only by some  randomness that Kagura  speaks to them, and put them in defy to become Kaguras (the grade this time) in order to see her.

It's only after that they take the initiative to destroy every rival festival platform and win the Shinobi Bon Dance. Even if they succeeds in defeating the Homura's Crimson Squad by ambushing them shortly after Jasmine beat them, Asuka put them out of course. They fail at becoming Kagura, but Asuka sympathizes but still tell them she is not going to give up her objectives.

Shinobi Girls Heart[]

On a street corner, Hanabi activates her fireworks Ninja Art while trying to understand a TV Quiz show question about "What has four legs in the morning, two during the day, and three at night?" She states she doesn't want to explode and usually distracts herself to avoid thinking about tough things. Still, sometimes she can't help herself. She wants to ask how people don't think hard when life is complicated, and she almost explodes again. Looking at the sky, she starts wondering if food can grow in space without air and how aliens survive without air and almost explodes.

"I'm not too good at thinking hard. I always go kaboom!" -Hanabi

In the Hanzo Academy gym, Hanabi KABOOMs and ruins Katsuragi's ramen, causing Katsuragi to demand Hanabi to fix her ramen problem. While brawling with Katsuragi, Hanabi resolves to fix her ramen issue but doesn't know how to. Katsuragi suggests she could cook ramen or buy a ramen bowl among other things, but it's too much for Hanabi to think about. Katsuragi tries to prevent Hanabi from exploding but fails.

"Making comics is tough! I can't do that!" -Hanabi

At Gessen Academy, Hanabi KABOOMs and destroys Murakumo's comic draft pages, which prevents her from selling her comic at the next exhibition sale. Sad that her explosion ruined another person's day, Hanabi battles Murakumo and Ikaruga. Murakumo exclaims how Hanabi ruined her drafts, and Hanabi offers to help fix the drafts. Murakumo suggests she could do toning work and explains that toning is like touch-ups for comics. The idea of toning overwhelms Hanabi, so Murakumo tries to stop her from exploding and fails.

"It's hard to stop thinking about things. See, I'm already thinking." -Hanabi

At the Snow Festival, Hanabi KABOOMs and encounters her elder sister Renka, who knows Hanabi exploded again because she heard the fireworks. While fighting Hanabi, Renka asks what made her blow up, and Hanabi deliberates about what the TV show question was. Knowing Hanabi will explode, Renka begs her to stop thinking, but Hanabi can't comprehend why Renka wants her to stop thinking. Renka insists Hanabi doesn't think but fails to prevent Hanabi exploding.

"I wonder if there are other people who go kaboom besides me?" -Hanabi

At Mt. Orochi village, Hanabi KABOOMs , Hikage greets her, and compliments her fireworks. Yumi agrees that the fireworks bring pleasant summer thoughts while Haruka can only focus on all the medicines Hanabi just broke. As they fight, Haruka says she can't forgive Hanabi breaking all her precious medicines. Hanabi explains her involuntary exploding but Haruka doesn't believe her. Haruka simply lists "trigonometry", "Fermat's theorem", and "Decimals" to see if Hanabi really does explode when thinking about hard things. Hanabi defeats them and explodes.

"Now that I think about it, what is it that makes something hard?" -Hanabi

At the Festival Grounds, Hanabi KABOOMs, and Minori loves the fireworks. Hanabi questions if Minori is scared, but Minori just wants more Hanabi fireworks. Since Hanabi doesn't know how to voluntarily explode, Minori says she'll become a firework and blow up. This shocks Hanabi, and Minori wants to know how to blow up like Hanabi, who explains she involuntarily blows up when thinking about hard stuff. Minori asks what kind of hard stuff since it's difficult to think of hard stuff. Hanabi ponders the question and explodes.

Not wanting to disappoint Minori, Hanabi tries to think of hard things but can't. If she keeps thinking, she will explode which won't help Minori learn to blow up. Minori asks if Hanabi is okay, and Hanabi explains she can't think of a difficult topic. Minori stays cHeerful and suggests they play. They play until the sun sets and Hanabi realizes that she should play to prevent her thinking explosions. Grateful towards Minori, Hanabi shows her many firework by thinking of all the hard things she encountered such as Fermat's theorem and what kind of foods aliens eat.

Dual Shinobi Hearts[]

A Heated Battle[]

After conversing their problems to each other, both Miyabi and Homura team up and show Renka and Hanabi their combined strengths of evil.

Dialogue[]

Homura: "*sigh*..."

Miyabi: "What's wrong, Homura?"

Homura: "Well, lately, a lot of the time, I've been feeling like I'm the only one who gives a sh*t."

Miyabi: "...Are you feeling that way right now?"

Homura: "Yeah, and what if I am?! This is serious!"

Miyabi: "It doesn't take much to stir your passions, does it?"

Homura: "Oh, right... Sorry."

Miyabi: "No, there's no need to worry about it. All we have to do is look ahead and keep moving forward as usual."

Homura: ""We"?"

Miyabi: "Well, there's...something on my mind as well."

Homura: "You too? What's that?"

Miyabi: "...My speech is far too flowery."

Homura: "Oh, so you know that."

Miyabi: "Wha--?! So it's true!"

Miyabi: "I had feared that everyone thought so, but now I know for certain! Ah, I should have curbed my poeticism long ago! Now it's too late! Such humiliation!"

Homura: "Whoa, c'mon. Chill out. You just said it yourself..."

Homura: ""All we have to do is look ahead and keep moving forward as usual"! So don't worry so much about what other people think!"

Miyabi: "Of course. Y-you're right."

Homura: "So, "as usual," what do you say we go a round?"

Miyabi: ""As usual"..."

Homura: "No fear, Miyabi! All we've got to do is go on charging down our Paths of the Shinobi!"

Miyabi: "..."

Miyabi: "To endure the indifference of the masses...to strive for the power of passion...to grasp the sword of revolution!"

Homura: "Miyabi! You get me!"

Miyabi: "Indeed! Your words were as a kiss from a bright, thorned rose, which drew the blood from my lips and let it flow to my heart!"

Homura: "That's it, Miyabi! You're setting my soul on fire!"

Miyabi: "Burn through, anima brucia, and lift this fallen angel's wings upon your rising heat!"

Homura: "There may be those who point and laugh at us, we who steer our lives by the light of our fiery urges..."

Miyabi: "...But I care not for them! One day, a new generation will look back upon us with awe and respect! So for now, let us go on forward!"

Miyabi: "Let us venture forth, Homura! Fate itself is in our hands!"

"No one wants a frozen past!" -Miyabi
"I want to set tomorrow on fire!" -Homura

Beginning of Mission:

Homura: "I burn hotter than magma and twice as intensely! That's me!"

Miyabi: "Wrapped within the sheath of darkness, the world is a blade called peace."

Renka: "...Wh-what's wrong with those two? Are all the other shinobi around here like this?"

Hanabi: "I like how Homura's so impulsive! Can I go do what she's doing?"

Renka: "Bein' impulsive makes sense 'round a festival , but Homura's a little bit...different."

Homura: "Different? Different how?! Brawls are like the flowers of festivals! We're alike in that way! You could call us sworn siblings!"

Renka: "See, this's the bad kind of "impulsive.""

Miyabi: "Then touch my heart's cold flame, and let it sear you a scar named regret."

Renka: "Yeesh! Do you ALWAYS talk like that?"

Homura: "Pretty much."

Miyabi: "What a foolish question."

Hanabi: "That's so cool! I wanna talk like her!"

Renka: "N-no, don't!"

Hanabi: ""What a foolish question..." How's that?! How's that?!"

Miyabi: "Not bad. Your tongue is a gift, like a diamond."

Hanabi: "All right!"

Renka: "Put a sock in it already!"

Hanabi: "OOOHHH! That whole speech got me right here!"

Homura: "Hanabi, you're no longer our enemy. You're one of us."

Miyabi: That's right. I would go so far as to proclaim that we share the selfsame soul."

Hanabi: "Aww, I'm so, SO honored! Eee, so happy!"

Renka: "Hey! Snap out of it, Hanabi!"

Miyabi: "Kindly put your happiness aside for now. We face a dreadful enemy ahead, one without form or substance."

Homura: "...We're up against the public eye, an enemy much stronger than any giant yōma. Knowing that, Hanabi, can you still commit?"

Hanabi: "Of course! I don't care what others think of me!"

Homura: "Miyabi. Looks like the fire from our souls is already spreading out."

Miyabi: "Indeed. "No life, no shinobi." That is the only way to melt this frozen world."

Hanabi: ""No life, no shinobi"!"

Renka: "Hanabi!"

Miyabi: "One day, you will come to understand, Renka. You will see that only the noble path remains."

Homura: "If you want to live passionately, come ask us anytime. Our doors will always be open. I'll introduce you to some intense part-time jobs."

Renka: "..."

Homura: "Now, off to the next battlefield! Our struggle is just getting started!"

Miyabi: "Yeah!"

Hanabi: "Hip, hip, hooray!"

Renka: "Whatever. They're just foolin' around. They're probably harmless. Hanabi'll be fine with 'em."

"Hanabi is a power fighter who wields a giant hammer. Since her attacks are slow and have little range, it can be hard to showcase her high attack power. Make sure to take full advantage of her Jumping Weak Attacks. Before touching the ground, hold the Weak Attack button to launch enemies up into the air and go for an Aerial Rave. When there are fewer enemies on the field, charge her Breach Art to hit multiple times as well as build her Ninja Art gauge. Her recommended Secret Ninja Arts are her Special! Trivia[]

  • Hanabi's name is written with the kanji for "flower, gorgeous" and "assist". It's also a homophone for hanabi (花火, "fireworks"), which is fitting given her interests and techniques.
  • Hanabi cause explosions when she thinks , especially complicated questions. Through, distracting her, if she isn't bored of that distraction, it can prevent her from blowing up.
  • Hanabi's pre-transformation outfit that she uses in missions is not available for any character except for her and her sisters to wear. While all characters have a "Mikagura Outfit 1" in Estival Versus, Renka and Hanabi have three versions, and Kafuru has four available. Additionally, what other characters call Outfit 1 is actually Outfit 3 for the sisters. For Hanabi, Outfit 1 is the version she and both her sisters use in missions while Outfit 3 is the version she uses in cutscenes (with the jacket and noticeably shorter skirt, even though the sleeveless battle version has a long skirt like her sisters). Outfit 2 is Renka's cutscene version. All of this remains true for Peach Beach Splash except the other characters now correctly identify the outfit they have access to as Outfit 3 (and still don't have access to any of the other versions).
  • Senran Kagura: New Wave confirms that Hanabi and her sisters are from the Goshin Village in Timeline 1, and that Sayuri brought them to Timeline 2 to help with the Kagura Millennium Festival, and hasn't sent them back yet because there is still something they must do in Timeline 2.
